Chicago River Development

Developers of Riverline, a 3,600-unit residential and mixed use development on the Chicago River in the heart of Chicago’s River South Neighborhood, wanted to do more than just build skyscrapers and condos.

So they directed the design team of Perkins + Will, Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects and AES to create a thoughtfully‐ crafted master plan celebrating natural open space amenities on this unique 13‐acre riverfront location.

Located in downtown Chicago on the bank of the Chicago River, Riverline will feature 3 ½ acres of open space, a spectacular river walk, retail plaza, park, children’s playground, river taxi access, kayak launch and riverfront amphitheater.

Central to the project is the AES concept of celebrating water, protecting the Chicago River ecosystem by managing on-site rainwater in a re-circulating system of wetlands and streamlets. This system restores a historic wetland system in an artful way that allows residents and visitors to experience and appreciate nature throughout the seasons.

The planning team is using the combined expertise of AES in ecological consulting, native plant nursery, and restoration field services to ensure that the landscape will be sustainable from day one of installation.

Riverline will provide a tranquil and inviting natural experience just steps from Chicago’s business district.
