As a part of an international design competition, AES worked with Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates to revisit the original design intent for the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, a national park that encompasses the St. Louis Gateway Arch. Teams were asked to provide recommendations to improve the park’s appearance and function while focusing on historical preservation and sustainability.
The team focused on vegetation and stormwater management, a new visitor center, and public event space. AES contributed recommendations regarding ecological restoration opportunities, as well as stormwater management enhancements.
As part of the sustainable facelift for the park, it was identified that the existing turf did little to contribute beneficial ecosystem services. In response, AES worked with the design team to identify appropriate areas for more natural meadows, and AES designed and tested native turf mixes for the site’s various environmental conditions.
