Northerly Island

To vegetate the new Northerly Island public park in Chicago with native plants of Midwestern prairie and oak savanna species, AES’ Taylor Creek Restoration Nurseries propagated and procured nearly 400,000 local-ecotype plants.

The project, on the site of the former Meigs Field in the Lake Michigan coastal zone of downtown Chicago, has become one of the largest native plant restorations in Chicago history. All plant materials had to meet a genetic radius requirement of 200 miles from Northerly Island.

AES also had a hand in designing the beneficial re-use plan of the former military airport, partnering with several other Chicago-area and regional firms to infuse ecological science and sustainability into the project nearly ten years prior to construction.
