When a local land developer proposed to construct a high-density neighborhood that would have doubled the small population of the City of Bayport, MN, community leaders worked with the developer to find a way to build a viable new neighborhood while respecting local – and ecological – values.
The resulting development – Inspiration – is a conservation neighborhood on blufflands overlooking the wild and scenic St. Croix River. The compromise came about when AES presented the vision and subsequent site design of “working with the land, not against it”.
Ecologists led the team process that was inspired to work with the land…from natural resource inventory of the 240 acres – containing an archaeological site – to concept planning for residential lots, streets, natural stormwater management and open space.
Plan approvals led to the protection and restoration of more than 100 acres of important habitat for declining grassland bird populations. Which has special significance because the site is connected to a sensitive Minnesota Scientific and Natural Area overlooking the St. Croix River Valley. Inspiration provided wide prairie buffers between residential development and natural bluffland savannas, with walking/birding trails throughout, and a conservation easement to ensure protection in-perpetuity.
