GIS + Planning

Planning has levels. GIS has layers. Good decisions have both.

AES has employed Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and mapping advances for more than 20 years, pioneering some of the country’s most innovative regional planning tools to support ecological project goals.

Our geospatial professionals develop custom GIS analysis, detailed maps, and datasets that inform land planning decisions for regional planning agencies, conservation planners, government bodies, and private corporations who seek cost-effective planning solutions for large-scale challenges.

GIS mapping of existing data (land cover, topography, soils, and aerial imagery) are often the first step toward understanding the regional context of natural resources, ecological values, threats, and opportunities.

Using these data, AES creates GIS models, often calibrated by field surveys, to characterize and/or mimic past, current, and future land conditions. These maps and models allow planners, land managers, and developers to make better decisions.

AES geospatial and planning professionals integrate skills to develop practical tools for balancing environmental protection with other community goals and planning efforts.

  • Comprehensive GIS Mapping Services
  • Natural Resource Inventory + Land Cover Classification
  • Watershed-Scale Planning + GIS Support
  • Database Creation + Data Management
  • GIS Model Development

Approach

Combining the efficiency and utility of GIS technology with the science critical for effective natural resource management, the AES geospatial team is able to optimize the use of analytical tools for the task of evaluating complex landscapes in space and time.

Examples of such analytical tools include LiDAR-based terrain and feature analysis, hydrologic and ecological modeling, land cover and feature mapping, and systematic/mathematic overlay techniques.

When critical GIS data gaps exist for a particular project,  remote sensing staff develops the “primary” GIS data that are needed.
