When ecological goals are fundamental to a planning project – large-scale or small – the science of ecology offers defensible, practical answers and multiple appreciated benefits.

Some ecological goals are extremely targeted, involving T&E species protection, for example, or restoration of an urban river mouth. Others involve county, watershed and region-wide goals for water quality improvement, flood reduction, greenway and recreational connections, and more.

AES offers broad-based ecological planning and consulting services for a wide variety of diverse clients, projects and purposes. Blending good science with enlightened planning is the underpinning of our planning concepts.

For watershed-scale projects or larger metro regions, AES geospatial staff supports ecological project objectives with precise data, mapping and remote sensing technology that adds depth and clarity to the understanding of land and water resources. AES remote sensing and natural resource inventory projects are among the national models of metro regional conservation planning.

Approach

We have found that when ecological goals are integrated with community growth objectives, the ecological systems themselves become a unifying factor to bring together what might otherwise be a divisive, fractional process among stakeholders.

Beyond the science, however, creative problem solving is needed to achieve client, stakeholder and regulatory goals. And finally, over time, plans must be carefully implemented with progress monitored to ensure desired outcomes are achieved.

Practicality of the plan and consensus of the stakeholders are critical to this outcome.

Ecological science, GIS data, remote sensing – these are simply the professional tools used to assess natural functions that we seek to integrate with our clients’ needs for sustainability.
