AES acquires digital aerial imagery with a strategic combination of high-resolution, multi-spectral ortho photography and digital oblique images captured from strategically timed flights of our fleet of fixed-wing aircraft.

By leveraging our understanding of critical ecological events (related to seasonal phenology and plant senescence), in combination with complex imaging technologies, AES is pushing the envelope with airborne sensor technology applied to ecological land planning.

AES acquires mapping grade, multi-spectral ortho images, with an emphasis on hitting critical, or seasonal, windows that maximize the value of imagery to planning and monitoring projects. AES also acquires low altitude, oblique imagery ideal for interpretation and inspection of on-the-ground conditions.

Our aerial imaging technology, integrated with the geospatial and ecological expertise of AES staff, provides powerful new tools for planning and analysis to support varied needs and projects.

Approach

AES ecologists have been using aerial maps and imagery in restoration planning for decades.

Since 2010, AES Geospatial professionals have innovated methods to capture high-resolution imagery with our Leica RCD-30 multi-spectral camera (red, blue, green, near infrared), that brings conservation planning to the next level of sophistication, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness.

Flights are carefully timed to capture vegetation “signatures” at peak times, often strategically selecting leaf-on or leaf-off canopy conditions, depending on project goals.
