  • Troy C. Anderson, B.S.
    Manager, Contracting Division
    Restoration Ecologist


    Troy has worked in the ecological restoration field for over a decade, developing a skill set that combines proven management abilities with extensive hands-on experience, knowledge of cutting-edge bioengineering techniques and solid understanding of native plants and ecosystems. As AES Contracting Division Project Manager, he provided on-site management for a multitude of large-scale projects in Colorado, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri and Illinois. He has managed restoration projects for private landowners, county forest preserve districts, park districts and other government agencies. Anderson has worked with The Nature Conservancy on projects ranging from research to planning and implementation. He also conducted corporate landscape planning and restoration at American Family Insurance, previously serving as the Habitat Enhancement Coordinator at the firm’s 400-acre corporate headquarters in Madison, WI where he implemented grassland and woodland restoration techniques. Troy has also worked as a Conservation Ranger, where he honed his fieldwork, ecosystem management and species identification skills.

    Steven I. Apfelbaum, M.S.
    Principal Research & Consulting Ecologist
    President & Owner


    Steven has conducted ecological research, designed award-winning projects, successfully navigated regulatory programs, and contributed his unique creative scientific expertise and enthusiasm to over 1,500 projects throughout North America and beyond. He is one of the leading ecological consultants in the U.S., providing technical restoration advice and win-win solutions where ecological and land development conflicts arise. Apfelbaum has authored hundreds of technical studies, peer-reviewed technical papers, books, reports, ecological restoration plans, regulatory monitoring and compliance reports. He promotes using ecological and conservation design principles in developments, industrial projects and parks that help clients save money while increasing ecological functionality, improving public perception and generating award-winning outcomes. Apfelbaum is also a highly sought after speaker at educational events focusing on ecological restoration, ecosystem assessment, alternative stormwater management and conservation development.

    Jacob Blue, MS
    Landscape Architect

    Jacob Blue received his MS from the University of Wisconsin in 2000; his master's thesis focused on methods for controlling sugar maple in a South-Central Illinois oak-hickory woodland and the subsequent effect on soil and plant regeneration. During his graduate work at the UW, Blue was a teaching assistant for landscape design, graphic and grading courses. He received his BLA from Penn State University in 1997 where he also received a minor in wildlife and fishery sciences. While at Penn State, Blue was TA for the first wetland design course co-taught by faculty from both the landscape architecture department and PSU's cooperative wetland program. Blue joined the design team at AES in 2003 after working in a traditional landscape architectural design office in the Detroit metro area. He has three years of traditional landscape architectural design experience, and three years of landscape architecture instruction experience. Blue’s projects before joining AES included municipal, corporate, institutional and private residential landscapes.

    Jason L. Carlson
    Cartographer/GIS Specialist

    Jason has six years of professional experience in GIS and stream assessment, stream restoration, watershed planning, GIS database management, GIS landscape and vegetation modeling as well as overall cartographic and map design. As a consulting project manager, Carlson is active in all phases of GIS cartographic/spatial analysis, database creation/management, and GIS/GPS mapping techniques. In these projects Carlson and AES utilize ESRI’s ArcView 3.x and 8.x technologies equipped with 3D Analyst, Spatial Analyst, and Image Analyst. Also used are AutoCad Map, Trimble and Garmin GPS technologies. Jason has also taken an active role in hydrologic data collection and instrumentation installation. He has worked as the field manager of several projects that have efficiently implemented the use of peizometers, telogs, datasondes and sigma sampling units. Within Jason’s field endeavors he has had an active role in research and mapping of bird territories and landscape vegetation patterns in the Quetico-Boundary Waters Region.

    Kim Alan Chapman, Ph.D.
    Principal Ecologist

    Kim has 25 years of experience in ecological research, natural resource planning, land restoration and land management. He has worked as staff ecologist for the Michigan Natural Heritage Program, as Midwest Regional Ecologist for The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and as Science and Stewardship Director for the Minnesota Chapter of TNC. He has taught conservation biology, environmental studies, botany and vegetation management at the University of St. Thomas, University of Minnesota and Macalester College. His master’s research focused on grassland ecology, and in his doctoral research he documented the differences in bird communities in response to development in nature reserves, rural lands and suburbs. He has authored or co-authored dozens of articles and reports for scientific and non-scientific publications, including Valley of Grass, "Tallgrass Prairie and Parkland of the Red River Valley," which won a Minnesota Book Award in 1999. Dr. Chapman’s past projects have involved land and watershed evaluation, natural resource planning, ecological management and restoration, ecological research, botany, ornithology, Midwestern flora and fauna, grassland and forest ecology, mapping and GIS, vegetation classification, government programs and group process facilitation.

    Corrine Daniels, B.S.
    Principal Nursery Manager
    Taylor Creek Restoration Nurseries


    Corrine graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (UWP), with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology-Field Emphasis. While at UWP, Daniels participated in research for roaster pile reclamation and timber stand improvement, worked as Greenhouse Technician at the UWP Department of Agriculture Greenhouse and Gardens and studied Limnology at University of Wisconsin-Pigeon Lake Field Station. At AES/Taylor Creek Restoration Nurseries, Daniels is responsible for coordinating seed collection, cleaning, plant propagation and bed development. Daniels is directly responsible for management of large nursery acreage, plant production and propagation through the corporate greenhouse systems which process approx. 750,000 plants annually for more than 300 native wetland, prairies and savanna species.

    Maegan J Droessler, B.S.
    Associate Ecologist Maegan assists senior level ecologists in the management of ecological restorations and related projects through vegetation monitoring, research, data collection and report generation. She is also the lead hydromonitoring technician for AES, which involves well site location and installation, data collection and analysis and technical reporting. Droessler began work at AES in 2004 as a Restoration Supervisor in the Contracting Division. There, she managed restoration of streambanks, woodlands, native prairies and wetland mitigation banks, supervising crews of up to 15 people. Her experience with AES also includes vegetation monitoring studies and technical reporting for several regulated wetland mitigation sites, wetland delineations, and restoration and management planning for public and private lands. As a student, Droessler worked on a large oak savannah restoration using Scottish Highland cattle with the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Blanchardville, Wisconsin.

    Jason Dremsa, B.S.
    Kansas City Restoration Contracting Superintendent

    Jason is the Kansas City Regional Contracting/Restoration Superintendent, providing field services for the implementation and maintenance of all AES restoration projects in the region. He has over four years of professional experience in ecological restoration and management, including projects to restore streams, shorelines, wetlands, woodlands, prairies and oak savannas. Dremsa is also well-versed in erosion control practices, native seed collection, prescribed fire and vegetation identification. As a Restoration Superintendent, he is active in all phases of the restoration process, including marketing, planning, estimating, propagation, installation and management. His experience includes a wide variety of significant project sites throughout the Midwest. In the Kansas City area, Dremsa is the primary field manager and client contact for the Zona Rosa mixed-use development and Rush Creek restoration project. He has also initiated estimates and coordination of construction processes for the Enchanted Lake and Gleason Glen residential developments. Jason brings a well-rounded background of experience and education to his leadership role for the Contracting Division in the AES Kansas City regional office.

    Jill Enz, MLA
    Ecological Designer/Project Manager

    Jill is responsible for design and management of conservation development and large-scale land planning projects. Enz has written conservation development guidelines for community master plans and has assisted and led community design charrettes to resolve concerns of diverse stakeholder interest groups. She has prepared successful rezoning applications for conservation developments and has presented information at township and county planning board meetings to attain approval for zoning changes. Enz is also adept at large-scale GIS analysis, and has direct experience preparing economic cost estimates comparing conservation developments with conventional developments.
    Enz’ master’s thesis focused on the economics of urban stream restoration. Her advanced design focused on Cole Creek in Omaha, Nebraska, using the Rosgen classification system as a basis for restoration design. During her graduate work at Kansas State, Enz was a graduate assistant for two courses: Natural Systems and Site Analysis and Environmental Issues and Ethics. Enz was also actively involved in the student chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), coordinating a department and professional charette for alternative stormwater management on the Kansas State campus. Enz is proficient in Land Development Desktop, Arcview GIS and Adobe Photoshop. Prior to receiving her landscape architecture degree, she worked for eight years as a project and database manager in the technology field.

    Sue Faville, B.A.
    Staff Ecologist

    Susan Faville received her BA degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in Botany and Biological Aspects of Conservation with an Environmental Studies Certificate in 1997. While there, she wrote a senior research paper on plant communities in a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) natural area on the bluffs of the Wisconsin River. She participated in seed collection, germination and transplantation of prairie dandelion for the International Crane Foundation where she also volunteered as a "Chick Mom." In that capacity, Faville fed, monitored and taught chicks about crane behavior. In addition she acted as Docent, fielding questions for foundation visitors. She completed the Wetland Delineation course offered by the University of Wisconsin Extension at La Crosse, and attended Wetland Professional forums offered through the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission. In addition to her biological education and experience, Faville received a certificate in Accounting and Business Administration from the Minnesota School of Business in 1978, working for several years as an accountant. Since Faville joined AES in September 2000, she has acted as project manager, supervising wetland delineations and natural resource inventories. She has also assisted on numerous wetland delineations and natural resource inventories, in addition to working on projects involving vegetation monitoring at wetland mitigation banks. She also has written the accompanying technical reports, such as annual monitoring and delineation reports.

    Nathan Gingerich
    Construction Project Foreman, Native Landscape Design

    Nathan leads native plant installation crews constructing formal native landscapes and restorations of wetlands, prairies and woodlands in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin. He has extensive experience reading and translating site plans, installing native seed, plugs, potted plants, burlap-balled trees and erosion control fabrics. Gingerich is also experienced with invasive species removal techniques and is an experienced equipment operator, familiar with various diesel trucks, trailers, ATVs, tractors, skid loaders, various implements, brush saws, string trimmers, chainsaws and herbicide application equipment. Prior to AES, Nathan served as a backpacking guide in a special youth corrections program for adjudicated teenagers in Colorado. He worked for three summers in archaeological surveys for the Kaibab National Forest in Arizona where he was also enlisted in wildfire containment and damage assessment activities.

    Charles Halbleib, A.S.
    Construction Project Manager, Native Landscape Design

    Charlie’s experience with AES includes installation of native plant plugs and seed to areas ranging from formal landscapes to wetlands, prairies and woodlands. He has restored woodlands using selective woody brush removal techniques, and is an experienced equipment operator. Charlie is very accomplished in taking site development from concept to final management plans. Charlie also has significant expertise in cutting-edge bioengineering techniques used in streambank and ravine slope restoration.

    Tara Hering, M.S.
    Greenhouse Manager, Taylor Creek Restoration Nurseries

    Tara has over twelve years of experience in the horticultural industry, with an extensive background in all phases of greenhouse management relating to native perennial plant production and care. As Greenhouse Manager for Taylor Creek Restoration Nurseries, a division of AES, she has overall responsibility for all aspects of greenhouse plant production: planning, scheduling, supervision and improvements to greenhouse equipment and systems, as well as all phases of seed propagation and plant production. Hering has conducted research examining the effects of mycorrhizal inoculant and fertilizers on field survivorship and seed yield of Parthenium integrifolium, and on the effects of nematodes on soybean yields. Her experience prior to joining AES: as a university researcher, as a Breeder Technician for Pan American Seed Company, and as Seed Supervisor and Propagation Assistant for a smaller private nursery; gives her an exceptional background for successful implementation of all phases of greenhouse operations.

    Joshua Kraemer, B.S.
    Construction Project Foreman, Native Landscape Design

    Josh’s experience with AES includes leading crews and implementing construction design plans for the installation of native plant materials in areas ranging from formal native landscapes to restorations in wetlands, prairies and woodlands in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin. He has also led crews conducting selective brushing activities and herbicide application to control invasive, non-native species. Kraemer is an experienced equipment operator and has provided client education in tree and shrub pruning techniques.

    Matthew Kocourek,B.A.
    Marketing Associate

    Matthew is a 2005 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UWW). He graduated with a major in Public Relations and a minor in Marketing. Throughout his studies at UWW, Kocourek studied public relations principles such as planning, strategies and tactics. He also studied economics, accounting, statistics, marketing, advertising, publication photography, sociology and psychology. In addition, he concluded his college career with an independent study on Logistics Solutions for U.S. Businesses. Kocourek completed an internship with AES during the summer of 2006 and was hired as a full-time employee in September 2006. His duties include creating marketing materials, design, formatting, photography, media relations and problem-solving.

    Carl V. Korfmacher, M.L.A.
    Vice President and General Manager
    Senior Landscape Architect (WI Reg.)


    While pursuing his Master’s degree in landscape architecture at Kansas State, Carl became interested in the prairie landscape. His thesis, entitled, "Perceptions of Native Plant Materials in Designed Landscapes: A Comparative Study of Landscape Familiarity and Preference," prepared him well for a career involving ecological restoration. He joined AES in 1995, after three years working in Denver, Colorado for a design/build landscape company. He began as the manager of the construction division, and then managed the consulting division, finally becoming Vice President and General Manager in 2001. In this role, he maintains responsibility for all business functions. As Senior Landscape Architect, he continues to act in an advisory capacity on many projects that involve landscape design, construction management, and real estate issues.

    Aaron Kubichka
    Project Manager

    Aaron is an ecological restoration project manager with ten years of experience designing, scheduling, installing and conducting on-going maintenance and management activities. He has managed hundreds of ecosystem restoration and management projects involving wetlands, prairies, woodlands and streambank/riparian environments. Kubichka has conducted vegetative monitoring, seeding, planting, brush removal, prescribed burning, erosion control, herbicide application, seed collection, mowing, invasive species control, GPS and GIS projects. He is familiar with all project management functions including client communications, estimating, contract administration, documentation, project tracking and invoicing.

    Josh Lapointe
    Project Manager

    After graduating from the UW system, Josh worked for the Aldo Leopold Foundation as a restoration associate, managing and restoring the Leopold shack property and working with local landowners to promote the Leopold Land Ethic. Josh began work with AES as a staff ecologist, managing all hydrological monitoring and reporting while also assisting with vegetative monitoring, wetland delineations and natural resource inventories. Josh then transferred to the AES Contracting Division as a Restoration Project Manager, where he has managed many large- and small-scale wetland and prairie restoration projects. He is experienced in crew supervision, including installation and management of native seeds, plants, shrubs and trees. He is also well-versed in project site management activities such as mowing, herbicide application, soil preparation and installation of herbivory-protective fencing and erosion control matting. He has participated in well over 100 prescribed burns.

    John L. Larson, Ph.D.
    Principal Ecologist

    John has over 15 years of professional experience in ecological restoration and management planning and design, as well as in wetland delineations. His work not only addresses the flood control aspects of stormwater management, but also water quality enhancement and groundwater recharge benefits not normally possible with conventional designs. Dr. Larson’s experience includes floristic analysis, land cover type mapping, threatened and endangered species investigations and ecological design. He applies this experience to restoration design, natural resource inventories, wetland delineations, wetland mitigation, wetland permitting and design of detention/retention/infiltration systems for stormwater management and treatment.

    Susan M. Lehnhardt, B.S.
    Staff Ecologist

    Susan directs and manages natural resource-related projects, conducts vegetation monitoring studies, floristic and rare plant inventories, habitat assessment, community classification and mapping, ecosystem health assessments, wetland delineations and restoration and management planning for public and private lands. Specializing in woodland and grassland restorations and monitoring, she has also worked closely in organizing and involving volunteers in these programs, contributing to their training and education. Susan has worked throughout the U.S. and Canada and also has experience in South American tropical ecosystems. She is currently researching the propagation of hairy-fruited lake sedge (Carex trichocarpa) and its use as an aggressive native mat-former in stream bank and wetland restorations to control exotic reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.).

    Douglas M. Mensing, MS, PWS
    Senior Ecologist

    Doug has over 12 years of professional and research experience in the ecological and environmental fields. He has applied expertise in: ecological inventory, assessment, restoration and management; conservation design and development/low impact development (LID); alternative stormwater management techniques (including rain gardens); flora and fauna surveys; bioassessment techniques; natural resource damage assessments; wetland determinations, delineations, assessment, permitting and mitigation; wetland mitigation monitoring; wetland vegetation and water chemistry monitoring; environmental review documents (e.g., EAW, AUAR); lakeshore and streambank restoration and bioengineering techniques; Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) Technologies. As a consulting ecologist, Doug manages and provides technical support for a broad range of these types of ecological projects. Much of Doug's recent projects have focused on working with clients to design projects in a more ecologically sensitive fashion, conserving natural features and functions.

    Kara E. Miller, MS
    Staff Ecologist

    Kara Miller began her professional career monitoring native plant communities, delineating wetlands, preparing native planting plans for stormwater detention basins, and applying for local, state and federal permits for development projects. Kara has completed over 50 wetland delineations in the 5-county Chicagoland area and has assisted with data collection and report preparation for several natural resource inventories and ecological assessments. Kara is an efficient project manager with extensive experience on streambank and wetland restoration projects. As a project manager, Kara works closely with surveyors, engineers, ecologists, designers, and construction managers to obtain baseline information, produce design documents for construction and oversee implementation. She coordinates fieldwork, team budgets and schedules; reviews engineering documents; and prepares ecological reports, conceptual design plans, specifications, bid documents and permit applications.

    Theresa M. Possley Nelson, MS, PE
    Staff Engineer

    Theresa is a Staff Engineer with over seven years of professional experience. She has extensive experience in developing river and watershed numerical models, performing geomorphic assessments, designing customized GIS applications, leading team projects and more. Theresa’s duties at AES include planning, designing, and directing engineering projects such as stream restoration, stormwater management/treatment, and watershed planning projects.
    Theresa is experienced with many programs including ArcGIS, SWAT, HEC-HMS, MIKE11, HEC-RAS, HEC6, MIKE21, HSPF, BASINS, CORMIX, Fortran and C++.

    Mark J. O’Leary, M.S.
    Director of Consulting Services & Senior Ecologist

    Mark has nine years of professional experience in all facets of ecological consulting, including natural areas assessment and management, river and stream restoration, and master planning of watersheds and greenways. O’Leary manages the consulting department at AES. O’Leary coordinated and supervised numerous wetland maintenance and monitoring projects with a focus on development of monitoring protocol including vegetation sampling and analysis, wildlife surveys and hydrology assessments. He designed and implemented numerous plans for wetland, prairie and woodland management, mitigation, restoration, and enhancement, and conducted hundreds of wetland delineations for most of the major developers in the Chicago area, obtaining Corps of Engineers wetlands permit applications as required. He acted as lead ecologist for monitoring nearly 50 wetland mitigation projects. Recently, O’Leary worked with several urban and suburban park districts to incorporate ecologically healthy natural areas and passive recreation opportunities into their properties.

    Christine Prah, B.S.
    Associate Ecologist

    Christine provides assistance on a wide variety of projects and efforts, including hydrologic and vegetation monitoring, threatened and endangered species monitoring, wetland delineations, GPS mapping and report assistance. Prah assisted The Nature Conservancy of Colorado with site stewardship activities including invasive plant surveying, control and mapping using GPS and GIS. She has previous professional experience in wetland delineation, plant identification, map interpretation and assembling land management reports. While acquiring her undergraduate degree, Prah conducted research on habitat selection of the Wisconsin state threatened Blanding’s turtle. She tracked the turtles using radio telemetry and analyzed and displayed the data using GIS and ArcView software.

    Todd A. Polacek, B.S.
    Project Development Manager

    Todd is responsible for representing AES during initial client contacts and is charged with sales and marketing of the company’s diverse array of products and services. He is especially well suited as a team member for conceptual planning of outdoor recreational resort developments and ecological restoration projects involving hunting and fishing properties. Other responsibilities include networking and promotion to generate new business for all three branches of AES: Consulting, Contracting and Taylor Creek Restoration Nurseries.

    Cheryl Quinn, M.L.A.
    Ecological Designer

    Cheryl Quinn earned a Master of Landscape Architecture from Cornell University in 2006. In her three years of study, she developed a concentration in ecology and environmental science. While in the graduate program, she participated in a restoration course project, creating a site restoration report along with detailed guidelines for the restoration of the areas surrounding a re-engineered section of stream in upstate New York.
    Quinn joined AES in the summer of 2006, after completing her master’s coursework. While in school, she spent a summer employed in the design field as an intern in a high end residential design-build firm outside of Aspen, Colorado. In addition to her education and internship experience, Quinn comes to us with project management experience gained while working for the Vermont Youth Conservation Corp as a crew leader.

    Scott Quitel, J.D., MBA, Certified Arborist
    Ecologist and Eastern Office Manager

    Scott has an extensive and diversified background that brings together ecology, arboriculture, law, business and urban planning. His involvement with stream and marsh restoration projects has been augmented by tree surveys, vegetation inventories, reforestation and urban planning experience. He has worked on wetland monitoring and field investigations of soils and hydrogeology. Scott has a thorough understanding through these experiences of the ecology of the northeastern forest / piedmont region and Atlantic coastal plain environment.
    With a Juris Doctor and an MBA, combined with his participation in the Whitemarsh Township Environmental Advisory Board and Shade Tree Commission, Scott has a broad background in the legal, business, and policy aspects of ecological and environmental management. This work has included meetings with state agencies, municipal leaders, and other stakeholders in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

    Christopher A. Raebel, B.S.
    Minnesota Contracting Branch Manager

    A native of Minnesota, Chris draws from over ten years of professional experience as a restoration ecologist. His project management responsibilities encompass supervision of over 30 projects annually. Duties include site analysis, restoration activity scheduling, crew assignments, client relations, safety, and construction oversight. Prior to joining AES, Chris worked for the Anoka County Natural Resource Division. His responsibilities included native systems management, native plant propagation, and GIS/GPS data collection and resource inventory. Additional related experience includes serving as a Field Biologist for the City of Fairchild, WI, where he conducted multiple tasks with the Karner Blue Butterfly Habitat Restoration Project in the Eau Claire County Forest.

    John L. Roll, Ph.D., P.E.
    Senior Environmental Engineer

    John has experience on a variety of water quality, water resource, hazardous materials, and environmental engineering projects including: planning, acquiring, and administering environmental and reclamation operating permits; soil & water quality analyses; hydraulic studies; groundwater contaminant transport studies; stormwater management planning; erosion control design; Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments; environmental audits; and hazardous materials inventories. Dr. Roll has designed sediment control basins for non-point source runoff from surface coal mining operations, and he has taught graduate level groundwater-modeling-theory and usage sections for a groundwater contaminant transport class.

    Mark Ruzicka, BLA, Associate ASLA
    Ecological Designer

    Mark has had experience in a wide range of projects since joining AES in the past year. He has been called upon to apply his technical and artistic abilities to a multitude of diverse projects ranging from 2,200 acre park design, conservation development design and construction, stormwater basin wetland design, stream restoration, natural resources inventories, residential native landscaping, and rain garden design. He has three years experience designing and implementing residential and commerical landscaping projects. He has experience applying WinTR-55 and the Rational Method to stormwater design problems. Mark is excited and very interested in the role of native ecosystems in the urban fabric—facilitating connections between people and nature—and is constantly seeking and discovering ways to merge the Ecological Systems Approach™ with alterative stormwater management/LID techniques.

    William W. Stoll, M.A.
    Senior Staff Ecologist

    Bill has eight years of professional experience in ecological assessment and management of natural, disturbed, and restored areas. He also has extensive project management experience on large-scale ecological studies and restorations projects. His work as a consulting ecologist includes natural resource assessments, vegetation monitoring, wetland delineations and permitting, threatened and endangered species surveys, and design of shoreline and stream restorations and comprehensive restoration plans. Large-scale project experience includes design and management of reclaimed surface mine and landfill sites and assessment and management plans for urban greenway, preserves, and parks. Stoll currently manages AES' contract to provide natural resources management services for natural areas within the Chicago Parks District. In addition, Stoll has been involved in a number of other monitoring, management, and research activities, including prescribed burning, invasive brush removal, hydrologic monitoring, water quality sampling, vegetation data analysis, greenhouse experimentation, and tree inventories.

    Mathew Stone
    Project Manager

    Mathew has nearly a decade of professional experience in native areas management and restoration, stream restoration, shoreline restoration, construction management and erosion control. As Project Manager, he has conducted on-site construction and restoration activities throughout the Midwest. Stone has gained extensive experience supervising AES field crews in the installation of innovative restoration projects and bioengineering treatments. He has a solid understanding of the applied science of ecological restoration as an underpinning to his broad range of field experience with site construction, maintenance and management activities. Matt has implemented and supervised a wide variety of restoration projects including: wetland mitigation, prairie installation and management, woodland and oak savanna management and stream bank and lakeshore stabilizations. Satisfied clients range from municipalities, forest preserves and parks to museums, botanical gardens, universities and private developers.

    Craig Tuttle, ASLA
    Senior Landscape Architect/Planner

    Since 1995, Craig has designed both multi-family and single-family residential subdivisions within the framework of conventional zoning, planned-unit development, and conservation development standards. He also has experience in commercial site design, park and cemetery master planning, which includes a 2001 Ohio ASLA Merit Award for a memorial park in Columbus, Ohio. Within the scope of these projects, he has provided project management and production for feasibility studies, site analysis, zoning submittal, site design from concept through platting, grading and construction documents. As director of the Landscape Architecture Department, he manages landscape architecture and land planning projects with an emphasis on conservation development, and plays an essential role integrating these with the allied disciplines of ecology, civil and hydrologic engineering and architecture. Craig has been lead designer on many conservation development projects throughout the Midwest, typically ranging in size from small 40-acre subdivisions to 1,000-acre site planning projects. Central to the design of these projects is the Ecological Systems ApproachTM, which elevates site ecology in establishing the framework for development while honoring cultural and economic feasibility of a project.

    Randy Vogel, M.S.
    Senior Ecologist / Illinois Branch Manager

    Randy Vogel has over 20 years of professional experience in natural resource planning, impact analysis and habitat restoration. His educational training was as a plant taxonomist and ecologist and his experience includes mine reclamation, natural resource inventories, urban forestry, stream restoration, stormwater treatment, wetland development and restoration, and mitigation banking. He manages the Chicago area office, supervising one senior project manager, three staff ecologists, a regional marketing manager and a clerical staff. Previously Vogel has served in a State regulatory capacity where he supervised review of surface mining permits and development of environmentally and ecologically sound reclamation methodologies. He was also employed in the not-for profit sector where he was actively involved in issues related to urban forestry, invasive plants (including development of protocols for quarantine and testing of new ornamental plant introductions) and accidental exotic insect introductions. He was also actively engaged in sustainable agriculture issues. In the private sector Vogel has supervised numerous lake projects involving shoreline protection, erosion control and watershed planning. He also has been actively involved in the design and construction of stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) in the watershed including wetland development projects. Likewise, Vogel is experienced in wetland and stream mitigation banking including both preparation of banking instruments and bank construction. He has also been directly involved in bank maintenance and monitoring activities including development of monitoring protocols for vegetation, fish and wildlife, and hydrology. Additionally, Vogel is actively engaged in the restoration and maintenance of a private waterfowl management area adjacent to the Illinois River.

    M. Beth Wentzel, M.S., EIT
    Staff Engineer

    As an environmental engineer with AES, Beth Wentzel is responsible for hydrologic modeling and hydraulic analyses, as well as preparation of design plans and specifications for stormwater management systems, stream restoration projects, and mine reclamation efforts. Her varied background includes expertise working in public forums, training and communication with government agency officials and participation in diverse stakeholder processes. Wentzel has extensive experience working with the Clean Water Act, including water pollution permitting (NPDES), dredge and fill permitting (Section 404), and water quality standards and restoration (TMDL) programs. Her work to improve conservation measures associated with hydropower dams and her technical background associated with various river protection matters, legal administrative appeals and environmental litigation allows her to work knowledgeably as a team member and coordinate with other disciplines.

    Steve R. Zimmerman, M.S.
    Staff Ecologist/Ichthyologist

    Steve has seven years of professional experience in fisheries management, stream assessment, stream restoration, watershed planning, wetland delineation, erosion control, hydrology monitoring, water chemistry monitoring and vegetation monitoring. As a consulting ecologist, Zimmerman is active in all phases of fisheries management and fish community sampling and analysis, using a variety of sampling equipment and techniques. He has assessed and coordinated fish sampling for biological integrity analysis using Karr’s, Simon’s and the Illinois EPA’s version of the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI). Zimmerman also specializes in macro-invertebrate sampling, macro-invertebrate identification, and water quality analysis using Hillsenhoff’s Family-Level Biotic Index (FBI) and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s Macro-Invertebrate Index of Biotic Integrity (MIBI). Zimmerman is proficient in stream health evaluations using a variety of assessment protocols. He has researched and developed lake, stream and watershed studies, including watershed management plans, feasibility studies and stream inventory/restoration studies.
