Prairie / Savanna Management
Is it a prairie or a savanna? A mesic prairie or a wet prairie? Or a weedpatch? You could ask the birds and butterflies. Or you could ask an AES ecologist or restoration professional who designs and creates these wonderful plant communities every day.
The pre-settlement landscape in the Midwestern U.S. was a vast, rich mosaic of wetlands, prairies and oak savannas. With projects large and small, AES is committed to restoring as many acres of these diverse ecosystems as is humanly (and appropriately) possible!

|
Large restoration projects such as The Nature Conservancy’s 7,200-acre Kankakee Sands Restoration require an extremely strategic level of thinking from AES consulting ecologists and restoration practitioners. However, small “symbolic” projects, such as our backyards, can also re-create ecosystem functions while adding aesthetic beauty and interest to our lives.
Over the past 20 years, AES has developed a prairie and wetland nursery that gives us native species availability for all our projects while it also allows us quality control over sensitive native seed and plant products. Taylor Creek Restoration Nurseries has grown from a small wild-collected seed plot into a 400-acre farm that produces more than 500 native species for prairie and savanna (and wetland) projects.
The need for quality restoration services has also led us to develop a highly specialized capability for installing native landscapes. Year-round contracting professionals, augmented by summer field crews, offer complete services in:
- mechanical or broadcast seeding
- mechanical or manual installation of plants
- complete site preparation
- invasive brush removal
- prescribed burning and mowing
- licensed herbicide application
- erosion control techniques
AES consulting ecologists and landscape design professionals can assist with plant specifications and project designs based on sound ecological science and aesthetic goals.
So, whether your goal is to enjoy hundreds of acres of flowing tallgrass prairie, to restore a degraded 20-acre oak savanna, or to attract hummingbirds to a stunning backyard patch of Cardinal flower, AES applauds it! And we’re willing to help in any way we can…
