Parks, Forest Preserves and Greenways

In urbanizing areas throughout the country, the preservation and restoration of open space parks, forest preserves, conservation district lands and regional greenways is in full swing. Dozens of public referenda have been passed throughout the U.S. directing public agencies to purchase and preserve open spaces, particularly near urban growth areas,

Often, parklands and greenways follow river corridors or corridors created by interconnecting lakes and marshes, and these exist with a varying degree of remnant native vegetation from the natural mosaic that originally thrived in these environments. Once established as public properties, these riverine or riparian corridors require restoration and management or, inevitably, they will be left vulnerable to invasion by aggressive, exotic species.

AES consultants have assisted several communities in their master planning process, not only to establish environmental greenways, but also to incorporate ecologically-sensitive management plans into the development of greenway corridors.

Even on sites unconnected to regional environmental corridors, park districts are seeking to incorporate ecological areas into developed active recreational areas. AES works with park districts, landscape architects and others to design and install natural stormwater systems and native plant communities such as including prairies, wetlands and savanna as integral elements of an overall park plan.

Forest preserve properties and publicly owned greenways, whether new or established, frequently exhibit a degraded state of “ecological health”. AES has assisted dozens of public agencies by assessing the ecological health conditions of their natural areas, recommending and designing remedial actions, and/or by contracting for the field services required to implement restoration plans.

Educational objectives are frequently among those of public projects, which is an aspect AES particularly enjoys. AES staff members routinely conduct educational presentations designed to educate stakeholders, enable public participation and to present the results of field research and recommendations.

In many jurisdictions, successful demonstration projects often precede the development of large-scale restoration objectives. AES offers a variety of informational materials, visual graphics and signage techniques to make each demonstration project an educational success and a positive asset to the community.
