Mine, Quarry, and Landfill Reclamation
|
In the restoration “industry”, nowhere is a technical understanding of ecological science more critical than on difficult sites such as metallic or non-metallic mines, quarries and landfills.
Reclaiming and revegetating these highly regulated sites demands a scientifically-grounded, accurate response to the issues raised by these land uses. And, on the highly successful projects, it requires a creative approach, with a vision for opportunities to create win-win situations for multiple stakeholders.

AES has been privileged to work as the ecological leader, in partnership with regulatory agencies, corporate clients and the public, on some of the most challenging projects undertaken in the U.S.
Our process of restoration has proven sound, as evidenced by quality projects such as the on-going restoration of the Flambeau Copper Mine (Ladysmith, WI). At this nationally acclaimed mine reclamation, monitoring results show biodiversity exceeding the requirements of a stringent permitting process.
One of the earliest AES projects involved pioneering work with the successful revegetation of zinc/lead mine tailings piles in southeastern Wisconsin. Two hundred miles to the north, the largest prairie restoration in Wisconsin grows where AES planted it near Black River Falls on the tailings and waste rock of the Jackson County Iron Mine at Lake Wazee, one of the most popular recreational areas of western Wisconsin.
The process of reclamation design on landfills follows a similar course to that of mines and quarries, although the permitting process is a very different proposition. Similar severe conditions exist such as steep sloping terrain, high erosion exposure and dry or variable soil moisture. Whether mine, quarry or landfill, AES has found that revegetation with drought-adapted native species offers distinct advantages in these severe conditions over more agronomic or conventional approaches.
And the ecosystems that can be restored in unique sites such as quarries offer marketable value through redevelopment into public parks or private developments.
To visit a national model of mine reclamation, take the trip to Ladysmith, WI to walk the trails of the Flambeau Copper Mine. Restored in 1998-99 as a natural landscape with 10 different ecological communities, the former mine pit is now a highly biodiverse, highly integrated landscape ranging from emergent wetlands to savanna.
