Green Roofs

Want to bring the beauty of native plants to places more unique than your garden? Install a green roof! A green roof is when the roof of a building is partially or completely covered with vegetation and soil. It is constructed of various levels above the actual roof structure surface. The vegetation is planted into a growing medium composed of expanded shale mixed with a bit of compost and sand. The growing medium is placed on top of an irrigation layer and a roofing membrane. Green roofs help you more effectively manage stormwater runoff by capturing and holding rainwater on rooftops for use by native plants. Other benefits of green roofs include increasing biodiversity and absorbing carbon dioxide, while producing oxygen.

Recently, Taylor Creek Restoration Nurseries has teamed with Weston Solutions, an internationally recognized engineering firm, to create a native version of Weston’s GreenGrid® System, a breakthrough modular green roof system.

The original GreenGrid system solves many of the issues usually associated with green roofs, and adds many benefits previously unavailable in green roofs. For instance, the GreenGrid system is modular, so it is much quicker and easier to install, and it weighs less than traditional green roofs. GreenGrid modules are removable, so access for maintenance and repair of roofs is quick and easy. And if a section of plants fails, the module can be replaced in minutes.

Native GreenGrid by AES takes the Weston GreenGrid System and adds native plant species specifically chosen for their suitability to the GreenGrid System. Now GreenGrid System green roofs can have the broad variety of species, colors, textures, heights, bloom times and even aromas that are usually associated with a native prairie, but faster, easier, with less weight, and all the other benefits of the GreenGrid System.
