‘Plugging away’ in Wild Meadows
|
|
It’s no surprise that the beautiful state of Minnesota is one of our nation’s leaders in ecosystem
preservation, restoration and development. AES recently purchased a 10-acre site near Hamel
with facilities to house the consulting, contracting and nursery staff.
“We can provide Minnesota with an integration of landscape architecture, ecology and civil
engineering using an ecological systems approach,” explained AES General Manager Carl
Korfmacher. “For example, our Wild Meadows project is the first of its kind to combine
stormwater management, quality of life and ecological restoration.”
Wild Meadows in Medina is one of Minnesota’s very first conservation developments – creating a
healthy community with minimal impact on the environment, a concept that has been steadily
making its way across the Midwest with groundbreaking projects like Prairie Crossing in
Grayslake, IL. The Wild Meadows project has proved a welcome challenge for the AES team,
requiring almost every skill on their roster of contracting services.
“We’ve done a lot of work around the retention pond for stormwater management – a lot of
native prairie restoration and pond plants – as well as some formal prairie ‘enhancement zones’ in
areas like cul-de-sacs. Instead of having a circle full of turf grass, we’re designing it with native
flowers and native prairies – huge butterfly gardens, basically,” said Troy Anderson, AES
contracting division manager. “Last fall and winter we also focused on woodland restoration,
removing invasive non-natives while salvaging native species including hundreds of sugar maple
saplings. We planted those into buffer zones between the woods and homes.”
Upon completion of the project, AES will have installed a total of 52,960 prairie plugs and
covered 104.11 acres with native seed. 536 trees will be transplanted and 565 new trees
installed. And Minnesota will have a beautiful new conservation development in keeping with
its statewide commitment to healthy natural environments.
